At fifteen years old, most teenagers are navigating school exams and weekend hobbies. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, however, is on the brink of rewriting cricket's record books. If the young batting prodigy takes the field for India's T20 International against Ireland at Belfast's Stormont Cricket Club, he will surpass a record that has stood for 35 years — and the team's batting coach sees no reason why he can't handle the moment.
India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak voiced his confidence in the teenager at Thursday's news conference, declaring he has "no doubt" Sooryavanshi possesses the "mental capabilities" to excel on the international stage. The remarkable endorsement comes after Sooryavanshi announced himself on the global cricket circuit with a record-breaking season in the Indian Premier League.
Playing for the Rajasthan Royals, the right-hander amassed 776 runs in just 16 innings — an extraordinary tally that included 65 sixes, setting a new all-time record for a single IPL season. Among those who tried and failed to stop him were some of the world's fastest bowlers, including England's Jofra Archer.
"In the IPL, he has faced Jofra Archer and many other quick bowlers, and it seems nothing is bothering him," Kotak said. "He is an extraordinary talent."
Yet for all the excitement surrounding Sooryavanshi, Kotak was careful to frame Friday's potential debut as far from a certainty. "The captain and head coach will decide the team," he explained. "There's a fine line between giving someone an opportunity and being unfair to some other player." Dropping a player in form would also carry its own complications, he noted — a testament to how seriously the team is taking the decision.
Should Sooryavanshi make his bow, he would eclipse a record set in 1989, when a 16-year-old Sachin Tendulkar debuted for India against Pakistan. That teenager went on to become one of cricket's greatest ever players — a fact not lost on those watching Sooryavanshi's meteoric rise.
For India, the matches at Stormont represent an opportunity to blood young talent while extending their dominance in the format. For Sooryavanshi, they represent something rarer still: a chance to begin a story that could span decades.
