Australia's energy grid is in the middle of a historic transformation. The country is now producing record amounts of renewable energy, and wholesale electricity prices on the eastern seaboard have dropped to their lowest levels since 2020, according to the latest report from the Australian Energy Market Operator.

The numbers tell a striking story. In just one quarter, 14 new renewable and storage projects came online, adding 3.9 gigawatts of capacity to the grid. For the first time, grid-scale battery storage across Australia more than doubled over the past year, exceeding 9 gigawatts. Household batteries are surging too, with 3,283 megawatt-hours of new home battery capacity installed — a 41% jump.

This clean energy boom is reshaping the energy mix in dramatic ways. Coal generation fell 5% and gas dropped 30%, with both reaching their lowest second-quarter averages since 2003. Year on year, renewables grew 37.1%, with wind leading the charge at 20% growth, followed by grid-scale solar at 12% and rooftop solar at 7%. July saw a particularly striking milestone: nearly 340 megawatts of rooftop solar installed in a single month, up 43% from the previous year. Many homeowners are pairing those panels with batteries — 46 megawatts of home batteries were installed in July alone.

Western Australia, which operates its own separate grid, has added 1 gigawatt of grid-scale batteries and 288 megawatt-hours of residential battery capacity over the same period. Even the mining industry is joining the shift. Fortescue Metals, for example, now runs electric trains, trucks, and heavy equipment on renewable energy generated at private sites. Even fossil fuel advocates like Gina Rinehart are turning to renewables as the cheaper alternative to diesel.

Despite the progress, challenges remain. Average wholesale electricity prices on the eastern grid fell 47%, but those savings have not yet reached household bills, and some customers are choosing to leave the grid altogether. Adding to grid pressures, 17 data center projects are now in development, expected to demand 9 gigawatts of additional electricity — roughly equivalent to powering one of Australia's more populous states.

Meanwhile, aging coal plants are becoming harder to rely on. Australia's Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, recently noted that not a single day has passed in the last three years without a breakdown at a coal-fired power station. "Coal is no longer baseline — it is too unreliable," Bowen said at the Australian National Press Club.

Still, many see the transition as unstoppable. "Despite the loud attempts to ride the algorithms of social media to stop the transition, the quiet majority of Australians are simply getting on with it," Bowen added. As batteries multiply and more clean energy flows onto the grid, Australia's energy future looks less like a debate and more like a done deal.
