When Leeds City Centre reached a scorching 34 degrees Celsius last June, a nearby woodland called Batty's Wood stayed more than 6 degrees cooler. That's like swapping a stuffy kitchen for an air-conditioned room — without the electricity bill.
Scientists from the University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University spent the summers of 2023 and 2024 putting tiny weather sensors on busy streets, in parks, and among trees across the city. Every 15 minutes, these sensors measured temperature and humidity, creating the most detailed map of urban heat the city has ever seen.
The results, published in the journal People and Nature, show that trees make a massive difference. Areas with tree cover were about 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler on average than nearby built-up streets. During the hottest summer days, treescapes — the researchers' word for areas with tree cover — were up to 5 degrees Celsius cooler in the middle of the day.
But the real eye-opener was the cumulative effect over time. Treescapes experienced 96 percent fewer hours of dangerous heat exposure than gray, built-up areas. That could mean the difference between a risky heat wave and a manageable warm spell for vulnerable residents.
Dr. Cat Scott from the University of Leeds said trees and green spaces should be treated like essential infrastructure — not optional extras. "We need to take the role of trees in our towns and cities more seriously," she said. "These aren't just nice-to-haves; they are critical infrastructure."
The cooling happens through a clever natural process. Trees pull water up from the soil through their trunks and release it through tiny pores in their leaves. When that water evaporates, it cools the surrounding air — basically a tree-powered air conditioning system that never needs electricity.
Fox Wood in Roundhay was 5.5 degrees cooler than the city center on that same hot June day. In Headingley, a rooftop weather station recorded 32.8 degrees while Church Wood, just hundreds of meters away, measured a comparatively comfortable 27.3 degrees.
Dr. Jim Parker from Leeds Beckett University, who led the study, said the evidence is clear: planting and protecting trees is one of the most practical ways to make cities healthier and safer as temperatures rise. "Our climate continues to warm," he noted, "and we need solutions that work."
The UK has already seen four heat waves this year alone. Scientists say urban tree cover could be a key part of making British cities more resilient — and more livable — for everyone.
