Harriet Dart fell to the court in Guangzhou after sealing a win she had been chasing for years: her first WTA Tour singles title. The 30-year-old Briton beat Austria’s 18-year-old Lilli Tagger 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a tense Guangzhou Open final, turning a set deficit into the biggest victory of her career.
The title gives Dart more than a trophy. Ranked 115th in the world before the tournament, she will climb back into the top 100 and earn direct entry to the Australian Open main draw in January. That is a welcome step forward for a player who reached a career-high ranking of 70th in 2024, but had spent most of the past two seasons outside the top 100.
Dart’s route to the final made the win all the more striking. She came through qualifying at the WTA 250 event, then kept finding ways back into matches. Her victory over Tagger was the fourth time in seven matches that Dart had won after dropping the first set. Tagger, the 2025 French Open junior champion, had beaten seven-time major champion Venus Williams on her way to the final.
The deciding set tested Dart again. Tagger twice erased Dart’s lead, but Dart broke for 4-3 and held serve to move within one game of the title. In the ninth game, Dart had two championship points on Tagger’s serve. She put an inviting mid-court ball into the net on the second, but steadied herself and got another chance. On her third championship point, a service winner ended the match. Dart dropped to the court in joy and celebrated with her team.
Her resilience has been part of a strong second half of the season. Since Wimbledon, Dart has won 19 of 24 tour-level matches on hard courts. Her 23 wins from 34 WTA Tour matches this season give her the best winning percentage of her career. She has also been working with former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, a partnership that has helped support her return to form.
The final marked Dart’s first tour-level final, and she left Guangzhou with both a career milestone and a clearer path to the season’s first Grand Slam. Tagger offered warm words after the match, telling Dart, “It wasn’t fun to be on the other side of the court today — you’ve had an amazing year.” For Dart, the win is proof that a difficult match can turn on one more chance taken well.
