What if the most important part of a scientist's discovery never makes it into the paper? Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have created a simple new way to dig up those lost stories — and it starts with putting a junior researcher in the driver's seat.

The format is called the "inverseminar," and here's how it works: instead of a senior scientist giving a talk to a room of listeners, a junior researcher presents a published paper back to its author. The senior scientist has no idea which paper is coming or what questions will be asked. No rehearsal. No polished slides. Just memory.

Jeremy Levy, a distinguished professor of physics at the University of Pittsburgh, co-developed the idea with colleague Chandralekha Singh and published it in Nature Physics. The concept emerged during the pandemic, when seminars moved online and attention spans tanked. Cameras went dark, audiences stared at grids of names, and emails piled up while someone spoke into silence. But the founders realized that flipping the whole setup — reversing who does the talking — changed everything.

"Every paper has a story that the paper itself does not tell," Levy said.

That turned out to be literally true in one striking example. Michael Crommie of the University of California, Berkeley published a landmark result in Science in 2010 about how graphene behaves under strain. The paper launched an entire subfield of research, and it reads like a clean chain of logic from question to answer. But during an inverseminar, Crommie revealed the truth: the discovery happened "totally by accident." His group had been studying graphene for unrelated reasons when they spotted something nobody could explain. Months of confusion followed. Then theorist Antonio Castro Neto "just happened to be in my office" one day and recognized what they were looking at. Castro Neto became a co-author on the paper. None of that chaos, confusion, or lucky hallway conversation appears in the final version.

Crommie also shared that his team spent roughly two years on two separate projects that simply did not work — and were never published. Nobody can learn from those failures because there is no record they existed.

The researchers tested the inverseminar format seven times over 27 months, and the pattern held every time. Senior scientists, rather than becoming defensive, almost always became generous. Being described from the outside turns out to be disarming rather than threatening, and people supply what the paper could never contain: the false start, the argument, the name that belongs on the paper for reasons the paper does not state.

The best part? The format requires no special equipment and no particular field. Any discipline with published research, a junior researcher willing to read closely, and a senior scientist willing to sit and listen has what it needs. It is uncomfortable for everyone involved at first — but that discomfort, the team argues, is exactly the point. Small tweaks to a format that is not working will never fix it. Only reversing who holds the floor opens up space for the hidden knowledge to surface.
